Research on Individualized and Synthesized Evidence (RISE) Lab
At the Research on Individualized and Synthesized Evidence (RISE) Lab, we study how knowledge begins with one person and grows into evidence that can guide many. Our work asks two connected questions: How can we determine whether an intervention truly works for an individual? And how can evidence from many individuals be brought together to inform practice more broadly?
One way we pursue these questions is through single-case experimental designs (SCEDs)—intensive longitudinal experiments in which outcomes are repeatedly measured over time while different treatment conditions are actively introduced within or across participants.
Within this framework, our research unfolds in three closely connected areas:

- Causal and statistical inference in SCEDs
- Development of comparable and interpretable effect size measures
- Synthesis of multiple SCED studies to estimate population-level treatment effects
Our methods are especially relevant in health and education sciences. Some populations remain underrepresented in large trials, including individuals with rare diseases and students in special education. They are also well suited to settings in which decisions about care or intervention must be individualized, as in precision medicine and individualized instruction.
We believe careful evidence at the individual level can improve practice. When researchers study and accumulate that evidence thoughtfully, it can inform decisions at the population level.
